After graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in Professional Writing, I became the first marketing employee at Founders Brewing. My five years there were a huge time for craft beer, and Founders grew at a particularly breakneck speed. Part of carving out a role for myself at the brewery included launching their marketing platforms and building their brand as well as all internal and external communications. Then, in 2015, I moved to Vietnam, where I began consulting and freelancing full-time.
In that capacity, I’ve done everything from writing travel articles to managing (many) website redesigns to launching orthodontic products internationally. I have used my skills and perspective to effectively formalize and grow marketing channels and content programs, always bearing in mind how they fit within overarching business goals and the larger marketing mix.
One recent client of mine who saw great success from my work was brick&batten. Beginning in 2022, I took a search-informed editorial lens to improve their content marketing platform, increasing the number of users to their site each month by over 50%, on average, in two years. The focus was on their blog, which I managed. This included developing a style guide, creating monthly editorial calendars, recruiting writers, writing myself, editing, and producing all posts on their website. Brick&batten averaged around 350K users to their site in the last few months under my purview, with around half of them coming in via organic search. As their CEO said to me, the company was at its strongest when they were able to keep me on as their full-time marketing director for around 6 months in 2022.
Next, I’ve managed websites and email campaigns (top to bottom) for a handful of clients (most recently: Artemis Strategy Group and Jason O’Beirne) and have worked on those platforms throughout my career. Last year, I worked with ERIS Brewery and Cider House, a women-owned beverage company in Chicago, to prepare their communications and marketing for growth. In that time, I led the redesign of their website as well as the recruitment of their first full-time marketing employee. And I’ve done everything from editing and producing blog posts to researching promotions opportunities to creating social content for one of my longest standing clients, BookBub, and its audiobook arm, Chirp.
I’m a Jill of All Trades marketing, especially those that touch content. And I’ve consulted with a number of small businesses, so I know the small business owner mindset in an out. Finally, my understanding of how marketing levers work together — and that success comes when they’re all working toward the same goals — make me an excellent collaborator with any and all of my clients’ internal stakeholders.
One fun thing about me: I’m a Certified Specialist of Wine and worked at a local small wine shop in 2020, most of the time with the doors closed due to COVID and the entire time while pregnant with my first child.
